Dr. Yvonne Wu is a child neurologist and epidemiologist with expertise in newborn brain injury and cerebral palsy. After obtaining a BS from Yale and an MD from Harvard Medical School, she completed her Child Neurology Residency training at University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She then pursued further research training at University of California, Berkeley where she obtained a Masters in Public Health in Epidemiology. Dr. Wu has been the recipient of numerous teaching awards at UCSF, and her research has been funded by the NIH as well as by several research foundation awards including the Ethel Hausman Clinical Research Scholars Award from the Cerebral Palsy International Research Foundation. Dr. Wu is on the Editorial Board of the journal Pediatric Neurology, and has served as an elected Council Member for the Society for Pediatric Research. At UCSF, she served many years as the Child Neurology Residency Director. Dr. Wu has published numerous articles on risk factors for cerebral palsy and newborn brain injury in term infants, with a focus on the role of infection and inflammation. Dr. Wu leads a team of collaborators including geneticists, immunologists and perinatal epidemiologists from several institutions, who have united in their efforts to increase our understanding of the underlying causes of cerebral palsy. Dr. Wu is also planning a clinical trial to test erythropoietin as a promising neuroprotective agent that may improve neurologic outcomes following newborn brain injury.
