Hospital Transfers
If you or someone you know is currently hospitalized and wishes
to transfer their care to UCSF, have the attending physician for
the patient contact our physicians directly by
calling our number and speaking with the Neurovascular Attending
on service. After hours, please call the UCSF transfer center at
(415) 353-9166. If you do not know who is the patient's attending
physician, ask the nurse caring for the patient to contact them
so you can request the transfer. UCSF Neurovascular physicians are
not able to accept a patient in transfer without speaking with the
referring physician first.
Many of the patients we treat in the hospital are transferred to us
from hospitals in the region. The most common reason for transfer is
stroke or subarachnoid hemorrhage (from a ruptured aneurysm). We are
experienced in all neurological disorders that require intensive care
including encephalitis, epilepsy, neuromuscular weakness (Guillian Barre
syndrome, myasthenia gravis), and other more rare disorders. We draw
upon a wider staff of UCSF Department of Neurology specialists in
neuromuscular disorders, movement disorders and cognitive disorders
(dementia, Alzheimer's disease, Cruetzfeld-Jacob disease) in order to
provide the best care for our patients.
