Our lab has a primary focus on mechanisms of neuronal cell death as they pertain to neurodegenerative diseases. Specifically, the lab is interested in excitotoxic and oxidative neuronal death in neurological disorders such as stroke and Alzheimer's disease, and the roles of astrocytes and microglia in these processes. The Swanson Lab is managed by Dr. Raymond A. Swanson, M.D. The lab is located in the San Francisco Veterans Affairs Medical Center, at the northwestern corner of the San Francisco peninsula. SFVAMC is a campus of the University of California San Francisco, and funding is administered through the Northern California Institute for Research and Education.
